One day in July, An old Shrimp boat captain and his sixteen year old first mate were out for a week on the water chasing the fruit of the sea. Their boat was a small one and they set out to overload it with shrimp regularly during the summer. They arrived to the shrimp haven at sunrise on Sunday Morning to begin the trip. The first drag of the nets was very successful and it looked as if it were going to be another beautiful week on the water. As the captain and the First mate set out to drag the second time in an instant the sky turned black.
A Large dark cloud swooped over the Pamlico Sound as the captain and first mate rushed to reel in the nets. The storm was causing outrageous winds swirling up vicious waves that were beginning to come over the Gunnels of the boat. Finally, after fighting with the nets the captain put the boat into high gear and out ran the storm to a bend in the river where it was more calm. The men anchored up and began to rest for the duration of the storm. After the storm passed the two went back and caught a great amount of shrimp that evening. After catching enough shrimp that the two were satisfied for their days catch. They went back to the calm bend they anchored in during the storm.
While they were anchored up , after they had eaten and cleaned up to spend their first night on the water, the first mate out a fish head on a hook and line and casted it off the rear of the shrimp boat. He then put the rod in the wench that reels in the shrimp nets. The two sat down in the cabin, poured drinks and then pulled out playing cards to pass time before they were ready to sleep. As soon as the cards were shuffled the first time, the Reel that was propped in the wench began to scream. The first mate rushed to grab the reel and turn whatever creature of the deep that had bitten around. This was the beginning of an epic test of strength and will as the First mate and the creature of the deep battled for hours.
After a long exhausting effort from both competitors, it appeared as if the creature of the deep had been defeated. The first mate leaned over the edge of the boat to grab a hold on the sea beast. As the first mate neared the sea monster, it caught a second wind and nearly pulled him into the depths with it. Another short lived battle occurred before the sea monster had finally been defeated. The captain of the shrimp boat helped the first mate to pull the beast up onto the deck.
The amazing creature of the deep was not only very strong it was also very beautiful. The captain and first mate both shouted with joy for the amazing animal they had captured on their small vessel. They were very excited about all of the delicious food they would be able to eat and share due to this catch. But then a feeling of sentiment overcame the two and they realized they did not want to end the life of this beautiful and very old creature. They decided they could catch enough shrimp to feed their families and they returned the amazing beast back to the depths. Again they shouted with joy and not only being able to catch a monster of the depths, but also returning it to its home instead of doing what most people would have and eaten it.
THE END!
